Why Does Alcohol Make You Feel Warm?

Alcohol makes skin feel warm by moving blood toward the surface, but that can cool your core. Why the cold-weather myth is risky.

Alcohol can make you feel warmer. That part is not imaginary.

The myth is the next step people attach to it: if a drink makes you feel warm, it must be warming your body. The biology runs the other way. Alcohol can warm the skin while helping the body lose heat.

Why the warming idea sticks

The feeling has a good sales pitch. A drink lands, your face warms, your chest may feel loose, and the cold porch or ski-lodge doorway seems less sharp for a few minutes. That sensory proof is hard to argue with.

It is also incomplete. Skin temperature and core temperature are not the same thing. The skin is the body's radiator. When warm blood moves closer to the surface, the skin feels hot because heat is leaving the core and reaching the outside edge.

So the better question is not "Why does alcohol make me feel warm?" It is "Warm where?"

The crack in the myth: skin warmth is heat moving out

Alcohol widens small blood vessels near the skin. The word for that is vasodilation: the vessels open wider, so more blood moves through them.

That makes warmth easy to feel. Warm blood that had been deeper in the body is now closer to the air, your clothes, your cheeks, and your hands. The sensation is real.

The problem is what that sensation means. A systematic scoping review of alcohol and thermoregulation found that alcohol increased skin blood flow and sweating, while core body temperature was lower with alcohol in 3 of the 4 studies that measured it. The same review explains that moving warm blood from the core to the skin would help heat loss, not prevent it.

That is the turn: the flush can feel like a blanket while acting more like an open window.

What the evidence actually says

The thermoregulation review pulled together 8 studies with 93 healthy adults. That is not a giant body of evidence, and many of the studies were done in warm or hot conditions, so it should not be read as a precise forecast for every cold-weather night.

But the mechanism is consistent enough for the everyday answer. Alcohol changes where heat goes. More warm blood reaches the skin; more heat can leave from there; sweating and heart-rate changes may add to the effect. The felt warmth is surface warmth, not proof that the body's core is safer.

That also explains why this page is different from alcohol and facial flushing or redness. Facial flushing can involve a separate alcohol-breakdown issue, especially when acetaldehyde builds up because the ALDH2 cleanup enzyme works slowly. The warmth here is the broader heat-flow problem: alcohol pushes blood toward the skin even in people who do not have that enzyme-related flush.

Both can make a face look hot. They do not mean the same thing.

The cold-weather mistake

The dangerous version of this myth shows up outside: drinking to warm up before a walk home, a winter game, a campsite, or a long wait in the cold.

That is exactly backward. MedlinePlus lists alcohol use as a risk factor for hypothermia, and its prevention guidance says not to drink alcohol before spending time outside in the cold. Hypothermia means the body temperature has fallen dangerously low, and MedlinePlus calls it a medical emergency: call 911 any time it is suspected. It also says not to give alcohol to someone with hypothermia.

The practical rule is simple: if you are cold, alcohol is not a warming tool. Get indoors, add dry layers, use warm nonalcoholic fluids if the person is alert and can swallow, and get emergency help if hypothermia is possible.

No drink is worth confusing the body's warning system.

When the warm feeling is only part of the story

Most warm skin after drinking is not an emergency. It is a body effect worth understanding.

Pay closer attention when warmth comes with other signals: heavy sweating, racing heart, dizziness, faintness, chest pain, trouble breathing, hives, swelling, confusion, or exposure to cold weather. Those are not "just feeling warm." They belong with urgent care, emergency help, or a clinician depending on the severity.

There is also the cutback angle. If feeling warm is part of the reason drinking feels comforting, treat that as useful information rather than a rule about yourself. NIAAA's Rethinking Drinking material describes urges as normal, usually short-lived, and something people can learn to recognize and cope with. A warm cue can be one of those urges: real, brief, and not a command.
